WashU & Slavery Project

Washington University Libraries created exhibits in conjunction with a series of related events focusing on the history of slavery and the stories of enslaved individuals in St. Louis. The Slavery in St. Louis exhibition and the Archives of Resistance Event Series highlight primary source documents from the Julian Edison Department of Special Collections at University Libraries. A related display of Black Numismatics will be on display in the exhibition Coins Across Time: Ancient to American Numismatics. The exhibit and events arise from the WashU & Saver Project’s efforts to examine and address WashU’s historical entanglements with slavery, which include foundational research with contextualization of relevant collections in the library archives.

Asia in St. Louis

Asia in St. Louis

Revisit and reconstruct the history of Asian Americans in St. Louis utilizing an intuitive digital humanities tool, ArcGIS StoryMap. The story map, called Asia in Saint Louis, comprises images, interactive maps, narratives, and interview videos, and is conceptualized and structured around the four themes/sections: Historical traces, early Chinese Americans, early Japanese Americans, and Asian American civil rights. The story map will use primary sources from four local historical societies and archives: Washington University Libraries Special Collections, Missouri Historical Society, State Historical Society of Missouri-Saint Louis, and National Archives in Kansas City.

Friday Pro Bono Clinic

The Friday Neighborhood Clinic, previously on Saturdays, has reopened to provide quality care to St. Louis residents in a more efficient and accessible manner. WashU med students lead this initiative to provides compassionate and skilled care to the uninsured and underinsured St. Louis residents. As an interprofessional establishment, the clinic provides care for health that is not considered “primary care” to allow for more expansive help.

Siteman Mammography Van

The Siteman Mammogram Van provides annual screening for women age 40 and over who have no signs or symptoms of breast cancer. This method provides efficient, private, and low-cost examination for patients. The van is placed at various St. Louis locations for optimal care.

The SPOT

The SPOT

The mission of SPOT (Supporting Positive Opportunities with Teens) is to increase access to health care for youth who have been disproportionately impacted by HIV, poverty, trauma, and discrimination. Providing physical and mental health services, this program from the Department of Pediatrics at WashU Medicine partners with youth to create safe and welcoming spaces for them to grow and achieve.

Project ARK

Project ARK

Project ARK at WashU Medicine provides prevention and service to those infected, affected, and at-rise of HIV. Through community education and outreach, Project ARK creates specialized programming to cater to queer and/or POC individuals. The program includes counseling, workshops, and testing services all at low-cost to the participants.

The Sever Institute at the McKelvey School of Engineering at WashU offers traditional and alternative courses for working professionals. It builds on experience to provide technical and leadership skills to St. Louis residents at their own pace.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis and Washington University in St. Louis Joint Undergraduate Engineering Program

This joint UMSL and WashU program provides a flexible engineering program for those in the St. Louis community. Students take pre engineering courses through UMSL and take the upper level engineering courses and labs at WashU in the evenings. The program offers three different types of accredited bachelor of engineering degrees: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Students are able to pay the more affordable UMSL fees while benefitting from both schools.

The Midwest Climate Collaborative (MCC) is a cross-sector network with a vision of a carbon neutral, climate resilient, interconnected Midwest region. It amplifies climate successes, connects organizations across sectors and communities, and builds capacity for collective action on climate. The MCC does this by sharing knowledge, supporting climate research, and pursuing federal and private funds.

Institute for School Partnership

mySci

Partnering with K-12 schools, WashU bridges research and practice to provide educators with the resources of the mySci curriculum. The mySci approach empowers schools to cultivate curiosity-driven education that is accessible to all students. Schools can volunteer to be a mySci partner as WashU provides the materials.
