The Engaged City: An Urban Humanities Initiative

The Engaged City is a joint project led by the Center for the Humanities (College of Arts & Sciences), the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity (CRE2), and the Office for Socially Engaged Practice (Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts) at Washington University in St. Louis.

In an attempt to bridge divides, this project creates publicly accessible co-created cultural maps of St. Louis that spatialize the individual and collective cultural knowledge bearers, organizations, and community members. It works to bring humanities scholars into interdisciplinary dialogue with architects, urban designers, landscape architects, legal scholars, etc. This initiative includes a number of different projects such as the Sumner Studio Lab, a lab that runs through the academic year to bring together Sumner High students, WashU students, and Ville residents.
