Dozens of noted scientists, philanthropists, and university, state and local leaders gathered Thursday, Jan. 18, to celebrate the dedication of one of the world’s largest neuroscience research buildings, a gleaming state-of-the-art facility on the Washington University Medical Campus.
University partners with Greater St. Louis Marathon
A tradition for more than two decades, the Greater St. Louis Marathon returns April 27 with a new name, a new course, new pre- and post-run events and, for the first time, the National Running Club Championships & Rally. The race also has a new partner: Washington University in St. Louis.
Live Near Your Work program expands eligible neighborhoods, size of forgivable loans
In an effort to better support employees and spur investment in historically disinvested neighborhoods in St. Louis and St. Louis County, BJC HealthCare and Washington University in St. Louis expanded their Live Near Your Work homeownership and neighborhood stabilization program.
WashU balloon goes over big
For the first time, Washington University in St. Louis sponsored a hot air balloon in the 2023 Great Forest Park Balloon Race, an annual hot air balloon festival held in Forest Park. “Time Traveler,” the WashU balloon, was among the dozens of entrants that delighted the community during the pre-race Balloon Glow, Friday, Sept. 15, and the race itself Saturday, Sept. 16.
Popular local restaurants to open campus locations
As part of Washington University in St. Louis’ broader efforts to partner with St. Louis businesses, University Dining Services has invited four local restaurants that are minority- or woman-owned to open locations at campus eateries in August. Beast Craft BBQ will serve St. Louis-style barbecue in Parkside Cafe. Owned by David and Meggan Sandusky, Beast Craft BBQ operates a restaurant in Belleville, Ill., and a food truck.
WashU student named to Forbes’ ‘30 Under 30’
Naina Muvva, a first-year student in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has been named to Forbes’ “30 Under 30” list in the education category for her innovative financial literacy software, Intertwined.
Student groups work to reduce food waste
In an effort to reduce food waste, two Washington University in St. Louis student groups have joined forces to distribute healthy, fresh food to local shelters and food banks. The WashU chapter of the Food Recovery Network collects produce from Burning Kumquat, the student-run urban farm, and from university dining halls to prepare meals for programs including the St. Patrick Center and Gateway 180.
St. Louis Fellows partner with local nonprofits, civic organizations to improve region
Dressing bullet wounds for the Bullet Related Injury Clinic. Analyzing biosolids for the Missouri Coalition for the Environment. Developing LGBTQ outreach plans for the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Missouri Chapter. This summer, Washington University in St. Louis undergraduate students performed these valuable services, and more, as part of the Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement’s St. Louis Fellows Program, which provides career and civic leadership training to students as well as a $6,000 stipend to intern at a St. Louis nonprofit.
High school founded with help of med school leader receives accolades
In high school, Hamza Jalal held a human heart. Only a junior, Jalal had the opportunity to study dissected cadavers in the anatomy lab at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. With faculty and trainees providing guidance, he studied the spongy lobes of the lungs; the brain’s soft, maze-like folds; and brownish, bean-shaped kidneys. But it was the heart that helped him envision his future as a doctor.
‘An amazing experience’: College Prep Program’s 10th cohort looks to future
On the final day of the College Prep Summer Academy at Washington University in St. Louis, the program’s 10th cohort gathered for a vision board exhibit. Each scholar pasted their boards with images and phrases representative of their goals and aspirations for the future.
